Fashion is a subject whose two main categories can only be these two – basic and fad. The basics are the types that are timeless and unchanged. They are available anytime and almost anywhere. On the other hand, the fad is the type of fashion that is only available when its popularity strikes, as a result of changes that is why it was called a fad or trend.

For clothing in particular, fads are more obvious and frequent. They can easily be distinguished from the basics, not until the so called plaid fad came into the fashion scene.
Plaid is basically any cloth with cross barred or tartan pattern. Recently, it is drawing so much attention in the fashion scene and spotted as a fad. But this design has been present long before and just continues to exist up to now which makes it part of the basics category. It can be seen worn by characters from old movies – like Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Robert Sean Leonard in the movie Dead Poets’ Society and up to the latest sitcoms such as Allen of Two and a Half Men and Rufus Humphrey in Gossip Girl. What makes plaid a basic is that it is continuously present from time to time but from being basic it has gained more popularity and has become a clothing fad.
